Postal Collage Project No 14
I participated in the 14th Postal Collage Project. A Roundtable Collaboration hosted by Berkeley Commonplace at the Berkeley Art Center
The annual project + exhibit was patiently and expertly facilitated/curated by Marty McCutcheon.
Exhibit Dates - May 17th - June 1
Preview Party and Fundraiser May 16th 1-5
Closing Reception - June 1st 3-5
All told. Postal Collage Project No. 14 had 285 Collages. Here is the complete gallery. and a brief video
Some details: After an artist registers they are organized into groups by postal region. My group #47 had 5 participants/collaborators in it. The roundtable process is such that each person in the group creates a starter collage. and then sends it on to the next person in their group. This continues on until ones starter collage returns full circle and is ready to complete and send on to Marty. Each person in the group contributes to each others collage. I have bequeath my collage to Berkeley Commonplace for the preview party fundraising auction. (link offers an opportunity to donate)
Below - my starter collage and it’s final form. 8.5x11 stitched collage w/ binding
Below that, a gallery that shows all of its stages.
Contributors: Myself, Arlene, Luna, Helen and Diana
Takeaways: Arlene said that my stitching was my super power and that comment on a personal level really made my year. I enjoyed anticipating the mail and wondering what each package might yield. I felt I was able to contribute to each piece in a way that was unique to me, yet complimentary or a contribution somehow. i love the many updates from Marty but especially enjoyed these unpacking videos The progress gallery was also very impressive and inspiring. so so many really amazing collages.
In the mail from Helen - a record album:
I added the stitched faucet collage to the record album so that it could be viewed through the center of the album cover.
In the mail from Diana - a mobile with a key!
I added a hook for ease of hanging and two stitched collages. see their front and back sides.
In the mail from Luna:
she painted an exquisite layered backround. it was fun to be 3rd in the process and to see what others had done. i added a mini stitched collage to the bottom right corner and extended the color pink along the side
In the mail from Arlene - a box!
in the box was an orange origami bird from diana, and a small painting by arlene. others collaged inside and out of the box. i used the painting to make a stitched collage and added it to the lid of the box.
each return or forward mailing i tried to insert something for the maker. a sticker, a postcard, a photo.
